Why Join This Free Old Town Walking Tour

There are many ways to visit Bangkok's temples, but very few let you experience them in the right sequence, with the ideal lighting, and with a guide who truly knows the Old City. This free, tip-based walking tour has been designed to show you the most authentic side of Rattanakosin: calm morning light, river breezes, powerful Buddhist symbolism, and the majestic architecture that shaped Thailand's history.

If you want a high-quality Old Town experience that feels like a boutique Bangkok tour package but free to join, this walking tour is the easiest and most inspiring way to enjoy Bangkok's temples, river life, and cultural heart in just two hours.

🟢 Starting Point: Itsaraphap MRT Station

We meet at Itsaraphap Subway Station (MRT) and begin our cultural journey on foot. A 500-meter walk brings us to one of Bangkok's most iconic landmarks: Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn.

What You Will See on This Route

This Bangkok Old Town walking tour is designed like a compact Bangkok tour package: in about two hours you visit three of the most important temples in the city, cross the Chao Phraya River (แม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา) by local ferry and walk through the historic heart of Rattanakosin (รัตนโกสินทร์). Here is what you can expect on the route:

The route is easy and mostly flat, making this Old Town temple walk suitable for most ages. It's a smart alternative to a classic Bangkok temple tour package: instead of being driven quickly from place to place, you experience the Old City slowly on foot, with time to take photos, enjoy the atmosphere and ask questions to a local guide.

Tour Highlights

🏯 Stop 1: Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn)

Entrance Fee: 200 THB (cash at the gate)

Duration: ~30–40 minutes

Rising majestically along the Chao Phraya River, Wat Arun is famed for its 70-meter prang (spire), covered with shimmering porcelain mosaics recycled from Chinese trading ships.

  • The steep steps symbolize the path to enlightenment.
  • At the Ubosot (ordination hall), admire the royal Buddha image designed by King Rama II, beneath which his ashes are enshrined.
  • Guardian giants at the entrance and mythological figures around the prang add to its legendary aura.

Fun fact: Wat Arun once housed the Emerald Buddha before it was moved across the river.

⛴️ Stop 2: Ferry Crossing to the Old City

Fee: 5 THB (cash at the pier)

Duration: ~10 minutes

We board a traditional river ferry to cross the Chao Phraya. From here, the beauty of the old Rattanakosin city unfolds — historic temples, glittering rooftops, and the atmosphere of Bangkok's spiritual heart.

👑 Stop 3: Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew) & Grand Palace

Entrance Fee: 300 THB (cash at the entrance)

Duration: ~20–30 minutes

Inside the Grand Palace lies Thailand's most sacred site: Wat Phra Kaew, the home of the Emerald Buddha.

  • The Emerald Buddha is a highly venerated relic, believed to protect the nation.
  • The temple dazzles with gilded architecture, murals, and mythical guardians.
  • The ticket also includes entrance to Wat Pho, so there's no need to pay again later.

🛕 Stop 4: Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha)

Entrance: Included in the Grand Palace ticket (no extra fee)

Duration: ~30–40 minutes

Our final stop is Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram (Wat Pho), home to the majestic 46-meter Reclining Buddha covered in gold leaf.

  • The soles of the Buddha's feet are inlaid with 108 auspicious symbols in mother-of-pearl.
  • Visitors can drop coins in 108 bronze bowls for good fortune, creating a soft musical prayer across the hall.
  • The complex also features the Royal Chedis, ornate stupas honoring the first Chakri kings, and the world-famous Thai Massage School, recognized by UNESCO.

How the Free & Tip-Based System Works

This is a genuine free walking tour in Bangkok (ทัวร์เดินฟรี กรุงเทพฯ), not a cheap sales pitch. There is no fixed price for the guiding itself: you join the Bangkok Old Town walking tour, enjoy the experience, and at the end you decide how much to tip your guide based on what it was worth for you.

You still pay your own entrance tickets and the ferry directly at the temple gates and pier. Those fees never go through us and are exactly the same as if you visited alone – the difference is that instead of figuring everything out on your own, you have a local guide walking with you.

This tip-based model keeps the tour accessible for backpackers, couples, solo travelers and families, while rewarding good guiding. It also gives you something very rare in Bangkok: a high-quality Old Town experience with a local guide, at a price that you control.

💰 Fees & What to Bring

Entrance Fees (pay in cash at each location):

  • Wat Arun: 200 THB
  • Ferry: 5 THB
  • Grand Palace (Wat Phra Kaew + Wat Pho included): 300 THB
  • Total: ~505 THB

👉 Important: All entrance fees must be paid in cash directly at the temple gates, never to us.

Both are beautiful in different ways. The 10:00 AM tour has soft morning light, cooler temperature and a calm, almost mystical atmosphere inside the temples. The 5:00 PM tour offers golden-hour light on Wat Arun and the Old Town, and you see the area as it starts to light up for the evening.
